9th Street, Bessie Smith, Blues singer, Chattanooga Tennessee, M.L. King Boulevard, Photography

093013_248PastLivesRI drive past this building at lest twice a day during the week. I am fascinated by the doors that lead to a long-since-gone balcony. I try to imagine who used to live in these rooms and what sort of lives they lived.

The building fronts M.L. King Boulevard – which back in the day was called 9th Street. Bessie Smith used to hang out in this area; so I’m willing to bet it has not changed much since then.

I decided the photo needed to be Black and White. I think it makes the image a little quieter somehow.

Cars, Photography, Roadster automobile

092913_247RoadsterR“Fun to drive.”

That is what the sign said.

So of course we stopped to look at it. Joe’s father cannot pass up doing anything fun – he especially cannot pass a car for sale without perusing it for a while. His interest is legendary.

He did not buy it – yet. But he knows where it is if he changes his mind.

Football fans, Photography, University of Alabama

092813_246FansRWe are Alabama football fans. These are the two gentlemen who were sitting in front of us today during the Ole Miss game.

I assumed they were long-time friends. Perhaps old fraternity brothers from years ago during their time at the University of Alabama.

They may have been father and son. I just couldn’t tell for sure. Heck, they may not have even known each other. But I think they did. I could tell by the body language.

At any rate, they were having fun. We were having fun.

Alabama won – 25 to 0.

Migraine headache, Photography, Self-portrait, Shadows

092713_245SelfPortraitWithShadowsRWell, I don’t call it Photos and Migraines for nothing. I had a doozy of a headache today. I stayed home from work, too. That has only happened once before in my 30 years of dealing with these stupid things.

But anyway, I stepped outside later in the afternoon today and noticed these shadows. Instant photo of the day.

Now, I have an appointment with Mr. Couch and an Atlanta Braves baseball game. My hope is the headache will leave me soon.

City property, Do not enter sign, Photography

092613_244DoNotEnterRDon’t worry. I won’t! Not with that Twilight Zone message.

Typical. I wonder how long this sign has been like this? All it needs is a small nut and bolt to put it back into place. How much could that possibly cost? .50?

If I brought them from home to fix it, I’d probably be cited for tampering with city property.

I better mind my own business.

Porker’s Barbeque – Snapshot of the Day, No. 243

Chattanooga, Coca Cola sign, Photography, Porker's Barbeque, President George W. Bush

092513_243PorkersROne of our photographers has a birthday this week, so several of us (not these people) met at Porker’s Barbeque today for lunch to celebrate.

I’m not much on barbecue, so I settled for a grilled chicken sandwich – which was delicious, by the way.

Anyway, the interior has an old-world feel to it, so I shot these people in front of the Coca Cola sign. . . even though they are Vol fans. (The University of Tennessee at Knoxville) We’re Alabama fans even though we live in Tennessee. The Vols are our enemy.

Be that as it may, Porker’s is around the corner from the paper, and has pretty good food. President Bush – “W” – ate here when he came to town several years ago. So it’s Secret Service approved.

Atlanta Braves, Day off, Milwaukee Brewers, Photography, Turner Field

092413_242FieldLevelRWe took the day off from work today to do a few things around the house and then go down Atlanta for a Braves baseball game.

As usual, Joe deals with a guy on the street for tickets vs. going to the ticket window. After a couple of minutes, the guy realized we only had so much money and the game was about to begin. So he gave us a deal.

Jackpot! Look at these seats! And since they are season ticket holder seats, we got a discount on our snacks.

The Milwaukee Brewers took the lead at the beginning, but then the Braves came back and tied it. Then the Brewers went ahead again, only to be tied again later.

So, it’s the bottom of the 9th with 2 on and 2 out. Of course. Doesn’t every great baseball story start this way?

Well, you know what happens next. Andrelton Simmons hits one over the infielders’ heads – and the rest is history! The crowd was going crazy. The players were going crazy.

It was his third game-ending hit of the season.

It was a good night.

Buenavista Mexican restaurant, Dinner, Photography, Scottsboro Alabama

092313_241ScottsboroPalmTreeRWe had to go to Scottboro, Alabama, tonight, so we stopped at Buenavista again for a lovely Mexican dinner.

These palm trees are in their parking lot, so I thought a nice, “out of place,” photo would be different.

You wouldn’t think there would be palm trees in the middle of the state of Alabama.

First Day of Fall, Perfect Day, Photography, Summer, Swimming pool

092213_240FirstDayOfFallRIt was a BEAUTIFUL, perfect day today. The first day of Fall.

Too cold for me to be in the pool, but not for Joe. He likes to squeeze every moment out of “summer” that he can.

While he sported swim trunks and floated around on the water, I sat in the sun wearing two shirts, jeans, socks and winter shoes.

Birthday party, Fall weather, Ice Cream, Photography

092113_239PartyForTwoRWe went out of town again this weekend so I had to grab a quick shot at a birthday party Saturday morning.

It was cold and raining outside, but we were all under a pavilion – so the party was fun despite the weather.

We all learned one thing: It is never too cold for ice cream!

They are eating cupcakes here, but ice cream was handed out.
