Sandwich Nazi – Snapshot of the Day, No. 323

121413_323SandwichNaziRJoe and I went Christmas shopping downtown today and stopped in the River Street Deli for lunch. It’s truly one of the best delis in town – plus we had a buy one, get one free coupon.

The only problem with the deli is, the owner – not from the South – is a little like the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld. No, that’s not true. He is almost exactly like the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld.

If you try to alter the sandwich you’re ordering in any way, he starts arguing with you and will proceed to give you a sermon on how the integrity of the sandwich will be ruined if you change it…….but he’ll make it the way you want it – “if that’s what you really want to do.”

Joe decided to compromise with the guy and only added a small amount of mayo to his roast beef sandwich, and did without the requested lettuce and tomato.

Nothing ruins a roast beef sandwich like lettuce and tomato.

But Joe had to admit to the owner it was truly one of the best sandwiches he’d ever eaten.

My integrity-intact turkey sandwich was very delicious, as well.

Meanwhile, these two men caught my eye. They looked like really good friends whom were having a good conversation. Turns out, the man on the right is a priest.

I wonder if he got the sandwich sermon, too?

Ancient Brownie Secret – Snapshot of the Day, No. 222

121313_322AncientBrownieSecretRThis is, by far, the very best brownie recipe I’ve ever tried.

They’re moist, rich and chocolaty.

They are well-worth the trouble, too.

I Should Have Halved It – Snapshot of the Day, No. 320

121113_320ShouldHaveHalvedItRI’m an idiot.

My sister has been telling me that for years. Some days it is more evident than others.

Today was one of those days.

I got inspired and decided to make granola from scratch. So, of course, I went straight to my favorite cookbook, “What Katie Ate.”

I’ve mentioned before how much of an inspiration she and her photographs are to me; but her recipes are really good, too.

Unfortunately I was not really thinking and made the entire recipe. I really should have halved it. Perhaps if a small army passes through our neighborhood, I could use it all.

I think what I’ll do is make some granola muffins with my creation. That might do the trick.

WithBookRAnyway,  it’s really pretty good if you’d like to make some yourself. Just remember it makes a ton.

This is her father-in-law’s recipe, and it is featured in her first cookbook, “What Katie Ate.”

Bob’s Granola

5 1/2 cups rolled oats
3/4 cup wheatgerm
3/4 cup shredded coconut
3/4 sunflower seeds
1 cup pepitas
1 cup almonds
1 cup hazelnuts, skinned
4 tablespoons canola, peanut or sunflower oil
4 tablespoons honey, plus extra to serve, (optional)
4 tablespoons maple syrup
1 3/4 cups sultanas, currants or raisins (or a combination)
1/2 cup chopped dried dates or figs

Preheat oven to 300 F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Combine the oats, wheatgerm, coconut, seeds and nuts in a large bowl, then divide this mixture in half, leaving half in the large bowl and setting aside the other half, covered, in a smaller bowl.

Heat the oil, honey and maple syrup in a saucepan over low-medium heat for 5-6 minutes until the mixture is thin and runny, then pour it over the oat mixture in the large bowl. Mix really well with a spoon until well-coated but not too clumped together; if the mixture looks a bit wet, mix in some of the reserved dry oat mixture.

Divide the wet oat mixture between the prepared sheets, then bake for about 1 hour, shaking the sheets occasionally to make sure the mixture cooks evenly. It should be a luscious golden color when it’s done – take care not to let it darken too much.

Remove the sheets from the oven and let the mixture cool completely, then tip it into a large bowl and combine with the reserved dry oat mixture and the dried fruit.

Serve in individual bowls with cold mike poured over and extra honey drizzled on top, if using. Store the leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

Wooden Villains – Snapshot of the Day, No. 318

120913_318WoodenVillainsRNutcrackers.

They don’t bother me as much as they used to, but still…. I wouldn’t want to be left alone in a room with one of them.

At least ours is not holding a weapon. And he has a rather pleasant expression on his face – so I guess he can stay.

No Diving – Snapshot of the Day, No. 317

120813_317NoDivingR“Diving into the shallow end or slopes leading to hopper bottom may result in serious injury or death.

That’s what the entire sign says.

Good to know. I’ll try to be careful.

I found another sign in our garage years ago. It’s a metal sign for what I think is an old gas station. One side has a big red number “1” on it. The flip side has a number “2.”

Yep. You guessed it. We keep it outside of the bathroom door.

I guess you can call us an “informed” family.

Pups on Parade – Snapshot of the Day, No. 316

120713_316PupsOnParadeRWe went to the Mainx24 Christmas parade today. Mainx24 is an all-day festival, complete with a dog walk.

I’m not sure our two would have done very well with all of those other dogs. They tend to be a little wild. But it sure did look like the dogs were having fun.

Now Lilly does enjoy the annual dog pool party. She takes that very seriously. Murray, on the other hand is very afraid of water, so he is not interested in attending.

Mexican Bar – Snapshot of the Day, No. 314

120513_314MexicanBarRI went with Joe down to Scottsboro again tonight, so we had dinner in our usual Mexican Restaurant, Buenavista Cantina.

You know you’re having a dull day when the bar of a restaurant is the most exciting thing you’ve seen all day.
