Flower Shadows – Snapshot of the Day, No. 163

070713_163FlowerShadowsRI found the perfect photo of the day while shopping today. It was of a little girl posing in front of a mirror in the middle of Banana Republic. I could not get my camera phone out quickly enough and missed the shot. She apparently grew tired of her charade and walked off.

Drat.

That opportunity gone, I had to resort to my own kitchen counter.

Railroad Bridge Murals – Snapshot of the Day, No. 161

070513_161RailroadBridgeMuralRI’m sure someone knows the story behind these paintings, but I do not. I Googled it, but had no luck. They are on abandoned railroad bridge supports (I’m assuming since they run parallel to an active rail line) half a block down from the newspaper. So you’d think I’d know.

This area was formally known as Onion Bottom. It was called that because there was a city dump there that was constantly burning – and made it smell like onions.

The former Farmers’ Market was in this area, as well. Now it is being revitalized with police services and homeless outreach programs.

Rainy 4th – Snapshot of the Day, No. 160

070413_160Rainy4thRToday is the 4th of July – and it rained all day long here. Hard rain, too. It was semi-cold outside, as well. Not like last year’s 4th where it was 106 degrees.

No pool. No lake. No boat ride. NO sunshine.

We did have some fireworks. They DO go off in the rain. That’s nice to know. And we had great food.

But mostly we stayed on the screened in porch and played Canasta. I’ve never played Canasta in my life, but Joe and I won in the end. It is a wild game, to say the least. Especially when you have family members involved.

Sew Much Fun – Snapshot of the Day, No. 159

070313_159SewMuchFunRThis is a jar full of spools of thread in the window of a shop I’ve visited with my camera before: O.C. Buckles & Co. (I’ll try to find a link in the morning)

Anyway, it’s a pretty cool shop that appears to teach sewing. I’ll try to go inside when they are actually open and see what they are all about.

Bumper Crop – Snapshot of the Day, No. 157

070113_157BumperCropRWe have several berry bushes in our yard; these, of course, being from our blackberry bush. We pick blackberries around our neighborhood (in the woods) throughout the summer and freeze them for future cobblers.

(Recipe to come later)

We have to compete with deer, chipmunks and pesky squirrels for our berries. If we’re not careful, all yields will be stolen.

It’s fun to grow our own food – albeit a small amount.

Dockside Fishing – Snapshot of the Day, No. 156

063013_156DocksideFishingRWe went to the Dockside Café tonight for dinner. People like to feed the fish, turtles and ducks from this overlook. I thought it looked like a nice family moment, so I decided to make it my snapshot of the day.

The food is really good, too. When we got back to Joe’s parents’ house, the bottom dropped out. It’s been storming ever since.

Geranium Jewels – Snapshot of the Day, No. 155

062913_155GeraniumJewelsRAs usual, time was limited today to get my shot, but I kind of liked seeing these geranium buds closeup. I don’t see as well up close anymore – so it’s pretty cool to use the macro lens to see nature a little better.

I thought I was buying all red geraniums. Looks like the wrong label was placed in the pot. Oh well. The pink ones are pretty too.
